DALTON -- A Dalton woman and her two dogs escaped injury, following an early evening fire on Wednesday. The fire, which was reported at about 6:15 p.m., at 245 Washington Mountain Road, forced the female homeowner, whom authorities didn't identify, and her two pets to climb out a bedroom window of the single-story house, according to Dalton police officer Jim Scace. Scace and Dalton firefighter, Barry Smith, responding in his own vehicle, were the first at the scene and used the woman's fire extinguisher to start dousing the flames in the living room where the fire started. "There was [plenty] of smoke and you couldn't see across the room," said Scace. Once additional Dalton and Hinsdale firefighters arrived, they quickly had the fire under control. Scace said the pellet stove apparently sparked the fire, which scorched curtains, a table and some papers. The woman and her two dogs were allowed to return to their home. |
